A bill of quantities is an itemised document that lists every material, labour task, and item of work required to complete a construction project — together with the quantities and unit rates for each line. Contractors, homeowners, and project managers use it to price jobs, compare quotes, and control spending from groundbreak to handover.
Standard sections inside a BOQ
A well-structured Bill of Quantities follows a logical trade-by-trade order. The most common sections are:
Preliminaries
Site setup costs: scaffolding, temporary utilities, project management, and site security.
Substructure
Foundation works including excavation, concrete pad, and ground-floor slab.
Superstructure
Structural frame above ground: columns, beams, brickwork, blockwork, and slab.

Within those sections, a BOQ breaks down into granular material and labour items such as: cement, structural steel rebar, bricks, sand, aggregate, concrete hollow blocks (blockwork), internal plaster, external render, paint, and associated skilled labour for each trade. Each line shows the description, unit of measurement (m³, m², kg, Nr), quantity, rate, and total amount.
